What You Should Know About What to Wear on your ATV in Fall

We get it. The fall season is coming, but you’ve got no interest in putting your ATV away just yet; it’s still perfect riding weather! With the change of the season comes a drop in the temperatures, so just as much as you want to stay safe, you also have to stay warm and dry. If you’ve been riding around in shorts and kneepads, it’s time to put those away and invest in some quality gear to protect yourself. If you want to know what to wear on your ATV in the fall, read on.

make sure you've got a good helmet and pair of goggles for what to wear on your ATV in fall

Helmet and Goggles

No matter what the season is, your number one priority when riding an ATV should be to wear a helmet. An accident can happen at 5 mph or 50 mph, and there’s nothing more important you need to protect than your head. Additionally, most states legally require that you wear a helmet when you go riding.

Whether you’re looking for an open-faced or full-faced helmet, there are a few things you should look out for. In the pursuit of the utmost safety, you should look for “DOT” and/or “Snell” logos. These mean the helmet has passed rigorous safety standards.

Your helmet should also fit nice and snug, and should not rotate whatsoever once it’s been strapped on. Can you fit your thumb between your forehead and the helmet? Well, this indicates that the helmet is too big! It’s important to make sure that your helmet doesn’t obstruct your view. Above all, you need to have 100% of your peripheral vision when you’re riding.

If you’re looking for an open-faced helmet, you should also shop around for goggles. You don’t want the sheer wind to hit your face, or for bugs to collide with your face!

Yamaha has a great collection of affordable helmets, all of which are DOT approved. Are you shopping around for open-face helmets? If so, be sure to check out their eyewear and check to ensure the goggles fit your helmet.

make sure you have riding jerseys and jackets, too!

Riding Jerseys and Jackets

Whether it’s hot or cold, your first layer should be some kind of long-sleeved shirt when you ride an ATV. The long sleeve shirt works in tandem with your riding jacket when you take a spill. If anything manages to pierce the lining of your jacket, you have an added layer of protection. It’s made to prevent (just about) anything from penetrating your skin.

You can wear any kind of shirt while you’re ATV riding. But we highly recommend investing in some riding jerseys for the most comfort. They’re made from moisture-wicking materials that protect you from elements like snow or rain, keeping you warm and dry. If your fall season is warm enough to ride around in just a jersey, make sure to invest in one with good elbow pads. A little insurance goes a long way when considering what to wear on your ATV in Fall.

If your fall season is a little cooler, you should invest in a riding jacket. These jackets are well-padded. They feature lining that is designed to retain your body heat, keeping you toasty no matter where you’re riding. Just like the jerseys, they’re also made from moisture-wicking materials.

Can-AM makes some great jerseys with quick-dry, antibacterial, moisture-wicking fabric and a mesh fabric for extra ventilation. If you’re shopping for jackets, check out Suzuki’s Adventure Jacket, with plenty of cargo pockets and a zip-out thermolite liner.

wondering what to wear on your ATV in Fall ? definitely riding pants!

Riding Pants

A good pair of long pants serve the same purpose as long sleeve shirts and jackets. Which is to say they protect your skin and your joints should you suffer any kind of fall. ATV safety is serious and is important from head to toe.

An ATV is hot and you need to protect your legs, but you also don’t want to overheat yourself. Here’s the issue with traditional jeans or pants. They offer no form of ventilation and very little in the way of actual protection. We recommend specially designed pants for riding.

The benefits of these start with the rugged materials that they’re made from, preventing any rips and tears. They’re also well-padded! Which is great for protecting all parts of your legs. But especially the part that typically takes the most impact: your knees. They’re designed with ventilation and flexibility in mind. Further ensuring that you’re safe and comfortable no matter what you’re riding or in what season.

Check out these polyester riding pants from Yamaha! They feature reinforced panel in the inner knee for heat. As well as abrasion protection and stretch inserts for added flexibility and comfort.
