6 Reasons Why You Should Buy A Personal Watercraft

TMS Parts has 6 great reasons for buying a PWC (personal watercraft)

Why Should I Buy a Jet Ski?

If you’re reading our blog, you’re more than likely a gear-head. No matter your vice; ATV’s, motorcycles, or anything else… you know how much fun it can be to relieve that need for speed. But, have you ever experienced the fun of speeding on the water on a PWC (AKA personal watercraft)?

We know, we know, you need to think about the cost and get the okay from your spouse. However! If you’ve been thinking about it, or just want to know more, we got you. Here are all of the reasons we think you should consider buying a personal watercraft.

Reasons to Buy a PWC (Personal Watercraft)

There are an endless amount of reasons you should buy a Personal Watercraft! PWC’s are one of the best things you can keep in your garage. However, we can’t write you an article that never ends! So, consider the 6 awesome reasons why we think you (yes, you!) should buy a PWC.

buying a PWC means catching the wonderful taste of freedom!

1. PWC = Freedom

It’s why we love motorcycles, and it’s the same reason we love a Personal Watercraft. Whether you’re riding a Jet Ski, Sea-Doo, or a Yamaha Waverunner, being out on the open ocean comes with freedom. Of course, the ocean isn’t a lawless wasteland. There are regulations on how old you have to be to ride, and necessary education.

What it does give you, though, is the freedom of a truly open road. Any direction, any speed, you can set your own course and begin your journey. Or you can just take laps on the shore. It doesn’t matter how you want to ride, you’re going to have a fun time doing it no matter what!

a PWC is way cheaper to buy than a boat is!

2. Cheaper Alternative To a Boat

There’s a reason you grew up being jealous of the family that had their own boat; boats are expensive. The average price for a new, 22-foot pontoon boat is about $35,000. That’s pretty much the price of an additional car, and that’s not even for anything fancy. If you want a nice fishing boat, it can run you a lot more.

The beauty of a PWC is that you get the same kind of joy from being on the water… but at a fraction of the price. The average PWC price can range from about $6,000 – $18,000 for new models. With how wonderfully fuel-efficient these machines are, the cost of operation is a lot lower too. So it’s a win-win as far as your wallet is concerned!

PWCs can be used for tow sports too!

3. Awesome for Wakeboarding and Waterskiing

Using a PWC for tow sports isn’t something you might generally think of, but PWCs these days are often made with a tow attachment. Or at least with the option to add one. PWCs are just as good for wakeboarding, waterskiing, etc. as a boat is! The possibilities are endless! That being said, towing someone isn’t legal in every state of the U.S. But it is in most, so be sure to check with your state government laws.

Some regulations in place to keep in mind if you do want to use your PWC for tow sports are:

  • Personal Flotation Device – A PFD is required by most states for tow sports, which makes a lot of sense. If you’re out in the middle of a lake or ocean, having safety precautions accounted for is important.
  • Mirrors – While this isn’t a requirement in every state, it’s a great boon for your safety. Being able to see the rider behind you, as well as anything else behind you, is extremely invaluable.
  • Age – Check your local laws on how old a PWC rider needs to be before you start pulling your friends out on the lake. Better safe than sorry!
buying a PWC is good for your health!

4. PWC’s Are Good for Your Health

Because your muscles are constantly in action when you’re riding, a PWC can be great for your health. Keeping steady is a constant workout of your core muscles, and staying stable keeps your arms and legs engaged. In fact, riding a personal watercraft can vastly improve your cardiovascular health, improving your heart health! Plus, you burn over 200 calories from just a half-hour of riding.

Beyond your physical health, it’s also incredibly mentally stimulating. Keeping your concentration focused on the water in front of you, you’re improving your attention span and your problem-solving and quick-thinking abilities.

playing on a PWC can relieve stress

5. Stress Relief

This one goes right along with improving your health. Owning a personal watercraft can help you relieve some of that unwanted stress in your life. We all have it. Whether it comes from your job, your family, or somewhere else, we all carry around a little stress in our lives.

We already talked about what a great workout riding a PWC can be, and because of that, it’s also a great stress reducer. Exercising naturally releases endorphins in your body, the feel-good chemical. So every time you get on your PWC, you’re not just having a good time because you’re ripping through the water at top speed, it’s medically helping you!

you don't even need a truck to tow a PWC, your sedan will work just fine!

6. You Don’t Need a Truck to Tow a PWC

Like we said before, owning a PWC is the cheaper alternative to owning a boat, and towing is a big part of that. You might think that you just sign a check for your boat and you’re ready to go… until you realize you need to get the boat to the water. Towing a boat requires a truck with the right amount of power to be able to get your 22-footer moving on the highway. And if you don’t have the right truck for the job, it’ll make getting the boat in the water much, much harder. To say the least.

You can tow a jetski with just about any sedan. Of course, you are going to need a hitch on your car, and you need to check the manufacturer specifications. But thanks to the PWC, no truck with four-wheel drive will be necessary! Most mid-sized sedans have the capabilities to tow up to a three-seat PWC. It might sound unbelievable, but check out this video of a BMW towing a PWC on the highway

get on the water with your PWC! you won't regret it!

Are You On the Water Yet?

A personal watercraft is more than just another gas-powered vehicle you have in the garage. It’s a penny-pincher’s boat, it’s a waterski tower, it’s a portable gym and it’s a personal therapist. What else could you possibly ask for? A PWC only wants a little gasoline and a new battery every now and then. I mean, compared to a 22-foot boat, a PWC is a walk in the park. Or… a cruise through the water. You get what we mean. I think we’re all on the same page now.

Be sure to share this with your friend who was thinking about getting one, or your husband that told you no more gasoline-powered toys. If this can’t convince them, nothing will! If you do end up with a PWC, (and you’re in Cali!) be sure to check out our list of the best lakes for jet skiing in the state.

The 7 Awesome ATV and UTV Accessories You Gotta Have

find out what TMS Parts' favorite UTV and ATV accessories are!

TMS Parts’ List of Must-Have ATV and UTV Accessories

Whether you’re riding through the trails in the woods, flinging dirt in the field, or just getting some work done on the farm, everyone uses their ATV differently. Some people need a workhorse, and some people just want to have fun in the summertime. Every rider has a different need and a different personality. That’s why you see so many ATV and UTV accessories. In fact, you probably see so many that it can be hard to know what’s worth looking for. That’s why we compiled this list of our favorite ATV and UTV accessories for every type of rider!

The Best ATV Accessories

There are so many different ways and reasons to ride, as you well know. But here are some of our favorite ATV accessories for every lifestyle.

a Cargo Carrier is a great ATV accessory

1. Cargo Carrier

ATV’s come with a certain amount of storage space. There’s a place to put your wallet, your phone, a spare set of sunglasses, and perhaps some other essentials. But where are you supposed to put cornhole boards, beach chairs, or the drink cooler? If you’re reading this list of great UTV and ATV accessories and parts, you know the answer is on your cargo carrier!

As long as your ATV or UTV has a hitch on it, you can install a cargo carrier. ATV cargo carriers are specially sized to fit behind your vehicle without sticking out on the sides. Don’t go trying to fit your Jeep Wrangler cargo carrier on the back of your Honda, though. Trust us, you’re going to have a pretty bad time.

Carriers come in both rack and box forms. Kawasaki’s high-strength polyethylene cargo box has a rubber-sealed lid, lockable latches, and bolts in place so your gear is always safe and secure.

find the perfect front grab bar for your UTV or ATV

2. Front Grab Bar

Sometimes riding an ATV isn’t easy. If you ask our opinion, if it’s not easy, you’re doing it right. But if your ATV or UTV is stuck in the mud, you won’t be doing much of anything. So when you need to guide your horse out of some muddy waters, you’re going to want a front grab bar.

Heavy-duty grab bars are some of the best. Yamaha makes theirs with aluminum alloy tubing and sheet metal. The bar is tough, durable, and made to last. It fits a wide range of years and a few different models, so you don’t have to scratch your head too much wondering which bar to get for your Yamaha.

an ATV winch will be the saver of the day if you're in a pinch!

3. ATV Winch

Here’s another one for all the mud-lovers and people who love having a hard time! If you’ve been out for some real-deal-Holifield mudding, you’ve probably gotten yourself stuck before. Perhaps you’ve got a friend with an ATV/UTV winch. So you know what a blessing it can be to have someone to pull you out. If you don’t have a friend with a winch, you know how hard it is to get a full-size ATV out of a full-size mud puddle.

However, the great people at Polaris make a wide variety of winches in different strengths to suit any level of need. Their selection includes winches with capacities of 3,500 lbs. They also sell synthetic rope, and remote controls to pull your winch automatically. Polaris’ best selling winch has a capacity of 2,500 lbs and comes with a 1-year warranty.

find an ATV skid plate that can work well for your ATV or one for your UTV

4. Skid Plate

It doesn’t matter what kind of rider you are. No doubt, your ATV is going to take a beating. Not just from the rough riding, the mud holes, and the nasty spills, either. It’s also taking a beating in ways we don’t always think about. Your undercarriage is constantly being assaulted by dirt, debris, and small stones.

That’s why a lot of riders like to get a skid plate ATV accessory! A skid plate is a metal plate that attaches to the underside of your ATV and protects the exposed parts from all of that excessive debris you don’t want caking up your parts.

Yamaha makes a really quality skid plate made of aluminum that is 3 mm thick. This replaces your plastic skid plate, which likely decays more easily. Yamaha also sells skid plate extensions that can cover more of your undercarriage and keep you riding clean well into the season.

sometimes you need a little help! ATV accessories can do that

5. Disc Harrow

ATV’s aren’t always all fun and games. Sometimes we have to put them to work. Farmers are definitely no strangers to ATV’s. They can be a really convenient tool to have on the farm. It’s not a horse that you have to feed or a huge tractor that you have to store and take care of. ATV’s are a perfect tool for the smaller jobs that are too much for just your hands.

If you’re planting food plots this summer for yourself (or to attract deer), you might want to check out the wide variety of disc harrows available for ATVs. Disc harrows can easily help you make bedding areas for a new food source on your property. And they get the job done without breaking your back. There are all different kinds of the disc and chain harrows to choose from for your ATV accessories.

cover it in mud, clean it, and then use a ATV cover to keep it clean and safe!

6. ATV Cover

If your family is like mine, they don’t let you keep your ATV in the garage. “It smells like gas, it’s ugly”. Well, remind me not to tell you what I think of you guys (in case my wife is reading this is a JOKE). You don’t want to keep your ATV outside in the harsh elements though, so what are you going to do? Get a properly sized ATV cover for your make and model! This ATV accessory is a great way to keep your ride out of the harsh weather, and also out of the way of your loving family (are they still reading?).

Arctic Cat makes really great covers for your ATV or UTV with urethane-coated exteriors. They make covers specifically for storage and for trailers. So you’re good to go no matter where you’re storing your vehicle! Yes, even whether it’s for riding to your favorite trail or for the whole fall and winter.

battery chargers can be a god-send!

7. Battery Charger

It doesn’t matter if you’re racing, having fun, or getting to work, we all need a battery charger in case of an emergency. If you’re trying to get the field plowed, or just get out on the trails with some friends, a dead battery is going to ruin your day. Pull-starting your ATV and letting it idle while the battery charges back up aren’t much better.

If you want to recharge your battery without having to devote half of your day to staring at your ATV in the backyard, consider getting a battery charger. Just hook up your charger to the wall and let it sit while you get some other work done. Kawasaki makes great and affordable battery chargers that will get you back on the trails before you know it!

find the perfect ATV accessory for you!

UTV and ATV Accessories for Every Lifestyle

Making food plots for deer, riding on the rugged ridges, and just getting around; there are tons of reasons why we need our ATV’s, and even more ways we can customize them. Depending on the manufacturer of your ATV, you might need some specific accessories.

Make sure to check the manufacturer’s website. And maybe even check out a forum for your brand of ATV or UTV to discover personal suggestions. So whether you want to see the mountain peaks or the ocean coast, take a look at our favorite places to take your bike inside or outside the city.

Our Favorite Winding Roads in and out of Los Angeles County

There are so many great places to ride in California. So many, in fact, that we couldn’t possibly name all of them. So if you’re in the Southern California area, you’re in luck. Check out these awesome rides in and around the Los Angeles, California area. In our humble opinion, these are the best motorcycle rides in Southern California. You’ll see why.

ride through Hollywood as one of your options for the best rides in Southern California

1. Sunset Blvd to Pacific Coast Highway

If you want to see it all, this is the trip for you. Start out anywhere on the world-famous Sunset Boulevard. For the full experience, we suggest starting around Highland and Sunset to get the most out of your Hollywood sightseeing. You see landmarks like the Beverly Hills Hotel and the sunset strip while Sunset leads you right towards the coast. Following the 405 freeway, the Pacific Coast Highway will lead you directly to the beautiful ocean breezes of the Santa Monica Pier.

This is a great ride if you want to get the “Hollywood” experience. There are so many fun sights to see on Sunset and you can make custom pit stops anywhere you want. But if you’re aching to get out of the city, this is a great route for you, too. Enjoy that beautiful California coast as you’re ripping up and down the highway.

the Angeles Crest Highway is one of the best motorcycle routes in Southern California

2. Angeles Crest Highway

Just 20 minutes north of Los Angeles, there is a secret oasis for motorcycle riders who want to take the scenic route. Follow the entrance to Highway 2 all the way to that oasis, the Angeles Crest Highway. The ACH takes a beautiful winding mountain road into the state park. Even better, the national forest areas are just north of the city.

There are beautiful sights and leisurely roads that are great for everyone from beginners to full-fledged pros. If you head up that way, a really popular dining destination for hungry bikers is Newcomb’s Ranch. Great food and a biker-friendly environment keep people coming back year after year!

head down Highway 38 this summer on your motorcycle

3. Big Bear

Highway 38 leads East out of the city of Los Angeles. It then goes through the San Bernardino national forest and towards beautiful Big Bear Lake. Riders will enjoy the quiet nature roads and beautiful looks at the surrounding mountains. There are also several wonderful rest areas for bikers to take a break and soak up the amazing mountainside views of the national forest.

If you’re looking for a place to eat, we would highly suggest the Seven Oaks Mountain Resort. It’s a great place to sit down and get a sandwich before cooling off in Big Bear Lake for the afternoon. This is an easy trip to make a day or a whole weekend out of.

Highway 74 is one of TMS Parts' favorite motorcycle rides in Southern California

4. Ortega Highway

Located in Riverside County, the Ortega Highway, AKA Highway 74, is a load of fun. If you start your journey in San Juan Capistrano you’ve got a wonderful 30-miles of pavement ahead of you. It all leads to beautiful Lake Elsinore, a premier swimming destination in Southern California. And definitely one worth making the trip for.

If you’re looking for some really great and affordable food after taking a dip in the lake, check out Guadelajara Mexican Grill & Cantina. They serve excellent and authentic Mexican cuisine, and it’s the perfect way to end a long, hard day of riding.

for a quiet, scenic motorcycle ride, be sure to follow I-10 to Highway 243

5. Idyllwild

Following Interstate 10 from Banning, you’ll eventually find signs for Highway 243 headed southeast towards Idyllwild. One part of what makes this trip so much fun is that it is extremely quiet. These roads are safe from a lot of the heavy traffic that plagues some other great motorcycle riding routes. Highway 243 is truly a hidden gem in that way. It takes you past lovely palm deserts and national forest without the hassle of too many other riders or drivers.

“Little traffic” might raise a red flag in your head, but rest easy knowing this route is well maintained. So if you’re looking for a little more privacy or solitude in your trip, this might be a great pick for your needs.

death valley is one of the most beautiful places to take your motorcycle out

6. Death Valley

Death Valley National Park is a place of extremes. It is the hottest and driest place in all of America. While that might sound a little intimidating, you should also know it’s one of the most fun motorcycle trips you can take in North America. It lies almost 300 miles outside of LA, so it’s not a trip for the faint of heart.

However, if you want to put your skills and your bike to the test, there’s no better way to do it. Just make sure you have a ton of water with you! It’s best to do your research to ensure you’re prepared; no one wants to get lost in the desert without water! It’ll be hard to tell if this is one of the best motorcycle rides in Southern California if you don’t prepare!

be sure to check out the Snake !

7. The Snake

30 miles northwest of Hollywood is a spot that is equally famous for its stars. “The Snake”, as the locals call it, is two miles of pristine riding on Mulholland Highway. It was a frequent stomping ground for Steve McQueen in the past, and it’s not uncommon to see Jay Leno driving one of his famously expensive cars on the highway. If you want to eat like a biker, too, make sure you stop by The Rock Store.

be sure to plan your motorcycle rides accordingly!

TMS Parts has the PWC Buyer's Guide for you!

Featuring a 4-cylinder, 4-stroke, 1.8 Liter High Output Yamaha Marine Engine, the newest model of VXR is nothing to shake a stick at. Inspired by the fastest racing models, the VXR features some upgrades to its design in the intake grate and ride plate giving you responsive performance like you wouldn’t think possible.

Outside of its great performance features, it also has something to offer the more leisurely riders. A newly designed reboarding step folds down to allow you to more easily climb back on after taking a swim. And it folds up conveniently when not in use! In addition, riders can switch from forward to neutral in order to reverse with a single pull on the throttle. This making docking your PWC a breeze.

The SVHO comes with waterproof, wireless Bluetooth speakers, a GPS Fish Finder, and beverage mounts for ultimate relaxation out on the water.

But don’t think they forgot to pack the punch in the engine. This model comes with a supercharged 4-cylinder, 4-stroke, super vortex High Output Yamaha marine engine with a displacement of 1812cc. But we don’t need to tell you that Yamaha doesn’t mess around, do we?

time to get on the water with your favorite PWC

If you liked the sound of the GTR 230 we mentioned earlier, you’re going to flip your lid for the GTX Limited 230/300. The 230 model features the 1500 HO ACE engine we talked about before. And the bigger cousin 300 features the real deal Holifield, the ROTAX 1630 ACE engine. The real claim to fame on this model, however, is the emphasis on the personal in personal watercraft.

These specific models feature the biggest swim platform in the industry. Which makes it perfect for lounging and soaking up the sun. You can also remove the rear seat for even more space on the swim platform! These models also feature a watertight phone box with USB plug in and Bluetooth audio systems. Sea-Doo’s aim is to give you the ultimate experience on your day on the lake.

Additionally, these models feature the same intelligent breaking systems and closed-loop cooling system engines that you’ve come to expect from Sea-Doo. Combined with their revolutionary ST3 Hull, providing maximum control and stability in the roughest conditions, it doesn’t get much better than the GTX Limited series.
